New Beginnings

Dear Friends of Liga MAC:

Dear Friends of Liga MAC

What’s Happening at Liga MAC:

For those who attended the recent Liga MAC fundraiser, Tacos Tostadas & Tequila, our profile this month will bring back fun memories. For those who did not attend: you missed one heck of a party!

New years herald new beginnings and the start of 2024 heralded the start of Liga MAC’s student support program auxiliary programs in our new Liga MAC Learning Centre. Donors, volunteers and community neighbours have been touring the new facility and sharing their excitement.

On a sadder note, we share the news of two Liga MAC students whose lives have been cut short and how Liga MAC is playing a big part in their families’ recoveries.

A Dream Made Real

Dear Friends of Liga MAC:

November, 2023

What’s Happening at Liga MAC:

It has been a busy month at Liga MAC! Volunteer activities including participation in the World Wide Technologies PGA Tournament at Diamante Golf Course, manning booths at both the Friday Organic Market at Palmilla and the San Jose Organic Market on Saturdays and operating the Donation Centre (on Marinos Blvd.) every Tuesday and Saturday have kept Liga MAC volunteers fully engaged.

A very special evening event to christen the Liga MAC Learning Centre took place for select guests on November 19. Final touches are being added to the building while staff prepares to move in and prepares for the start of classes in January.

HURRICANE NORMA UPDATE: Our October report was written before Hurricane Norma paid a visit. We are happy to report that all our staff and their families are well. The staff will be checking in on our Liga MAC families in the next few days. And, the Learning Centre has survived its first hurricane with nothing more than a minor leak.

What’s Happening at Liga MAC:

It is difficult to pass the intersection of Luis Castro and Margarito Sandez in the Colonia of Zacatal without noticing the imposing two storey Liga MAC Learning Centre announcing its presence on the local scene.

Dear Friends of Liga MAC:

August, 2023

What’s Happening at Liga MAC:

As a followup to an interview with mentors Lisa Heid and Eric Parizek done by guest contributor Karen Woodard Chávez for our May update, Karen reports on the 3 Liga MAC mentees who have benefitted from Lisa and Eric’s tutelage.

Relationships, can be a source of support and a bridge to the future. Thanks to Liga MAC’s connections and mentorship program, 3 Liga MAC students will be entering an employment internship to complete their education.

Congratulations to the Grad!

What’s Happening at Liga MAC:

The summer heat has swept into Los Cabos just as students are leaving the classroom. Meanwhile, Liga MAC’s staff has been attending graduation ceremonies for student support program students and preparing for the intake of students for the 2023/2024 school year.

Construction of LigaMAC’s new Learning Centre is progressing well and we expect completion for use during the 2023/24 school year. Staff are excited to move into their new space mid September and locals are amazed at building pace and proud to have this new facility in their neighbourhood. Read more in the Learning Centre Update.

Overcoming Adversity

Dear Friends of Liga MAC:

What’s happening at Liga MAC:

It would be fair to say that all of Liga MAC’s 300 Student Support Program students face adversity in their young lives whether it be financial, emotional, psychological or physical. Our profile this month will report on one of our students who has had to face the ultimate adversity in his quest to graduate from high school.

As our 2023 graduating class prepares for life after high school, another crop of eager student support program students is being interviewed for acceptance into the program.  Our Liga MAC staff, who are working from temporary office space, is also currently reviewing the files of the 250 existing students wishing to renew their contracts with Liga MAC.

The new home for Liga MAC’s administrative offices, program classrooms and resource centre is moving rapidly towards its completion this fall. Staff and volunteers are actively procuring furnishings for Liga MAC’s new Learning Centre. The Learning Centre Update relates how interest in the new building is growing.

Liga MAC volunteer and event activities have concluded for the summer, but will return this November with some exciting season openers!

Finding Inspiration

Dear Friends of Liga MAC:

Dear Friends of Liga MAC

Monitoring 300+ students can be an onerous task for Liga Mac’s staff – that’s where our volunteers are able to relieve some of the pressure. A volunteer program that was developed prior to the pandemic is now coming into it’s own and guest contributor, Karen Woodard Chavez, will report on Liga MAC’s mentorship program in an interview with mentors Eric Parizek and Lisa Heid.

As the school year winds down so are Liga MAC’s student support programs but the drive to recruit new students is heating up. Also kicking into high gear is construction progress of Liga MAC’s new Learning Centre.

The Race for Education fundraiser, has concluded with a happy result!

Dr. Deneb Poli draws our attention to some important health considerations as the WHO declares an end to the COVID-19 global health emergency.

trabajo en equipo

Teamwork

Dear Friends of Liga MAC:

The job of operating Liga MAC’s programs and organizing its 300 students falls to Liga MAC’s efficient staff team. One of those team members is tasked with monitoring Liga MAC’s student outcomes and brings a varied background to her post as Co-ordinator of Social Services. Our profile this month will introduce her and touch on some of her many talents.

The Semana Santa (Easter) school break has just concluded. As students head back to school, Liga MAC’s programs will also restart (see Programs Report). Meanwhile our new Learning Centre is rising from the grounds of the former Centro de Apoyo. In-kind donations are starting to roll in as the building takes shape (see Learning Centre Report).

GIVING BACK

Dear Friends of Liga MAC:

In Liga MAC’s 25 plus year history, there have been legions of volunteers who have devoted their time and energies to making sure that the children and families of San Jose del Cabo received the help they required. In fact without volunteers organizing fundraising campaigns and governing the practices of Liga MAC, there would be no organization. It is particularly poignant however, when one of those being helped not only is in a position to help others but also recognizes the value of helping others. This month we profile a former student who has not only found her vocation but her avocation.

Peddling for Health and Liga MAC

Dear Friends of Liga MAC:

Nutrition and fitness were integral parts of the pre-pandemic “Health Through Education” program offered to Liga MAC families. The program was designed and delivered by leading San Jose del Cabo physician and former Liga MAC Board member, Dr. Mauricio Mercado.
