A few weeks ago, Tony came to the Support Center and told us that he could not see well with one eye, which was a new thing. In addition, nothing wrong had happened that he could identify as the cause. We sent him immediately to see an eye doctor, who diagnosed retinal detachment saying that surgery was imperative.
The surgery is not covered under Seguro Popular. The service is not available at the State Hospital either, which left Tony with the only choice he had, surgery performed by a private eye surgeon. Thanks to the advocacy work of Liga MAC, Doctor Fausto Miguel Lechuga performed a successful surgery on Tony’s eye on November 23rd, 2019. He is now in recovery with high expectations of full recuperation.
This was made possible thanks to the generous contribution of Dr. Lechuga, and also thanks to the Health Department of the City of Los Cabos, since they paid a portion of the surgery cost; Los Cabos Children’s Foundation offered their advice; and most especially, Tony’s relatives, who not only worked hard to pay half of the cost, but they took part of the steps needed to complete the process.
This accomplishment is the result of a team effort, including our donors, who make our work possible. Tony has been fighting to restore his health focusing on starting a productive and self-sufficient life. This was a successful step in the right path.
We are needing to make room for new donations of used clothing, household items and books; therefore, we are having a special clearance at the Liga MAC Donation Center this Saturday, November 30th, 8am – 1pm. Everything will be $10 to $30 Pesos, including all English books and DVDs (Spanish books/DVDs will be $10 MXP). Good time to pick up reading material for your houseful of holiday guests or yourself.

Also, we always accept new donations of clean, lightly used clothing, household items, books, puzzles, games. Drop offs can be made Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8-1pm. Most airlines allow each passenger one free humanitarian suitcase per flight (check in advance). Why not ask your visiting family & friends to pack an extra bag in support of Liga MAC? They can even leave the bag if they wish!

We want to thank our friends at ICF for the support provided to Liga MAC all these years. We are forever grateful for helping us to grow.
Every year, on the first Tuesday of December, Liga MAC’s Volunteers organize a community event called Christmas Fiesta. The event is to celebrate the spirit og giving and takes place at The Shoppes at Palmilla. A group of Liga MAC’s students become the ambassadors of the night by singing Christmas Carols. Thanks to probono collaboration of Maestro Mario Lozano, a local professional musician and singer, a selected group of 18 students out of the 328 that we have under our wing this year, are having this fabuluois experience that otherwise they could not have. Being part of the choir gives them the chance to express themselves through singing, they gain self-confidence and also increase their general knowledge.
We mentor and follow-up our kids along their way through a variety of activities that supplement their preparation for life, such as the self-esteem & social skills workshop. The workshop is designed for 7th & 8th graders, and is taught at Liga MAC’s Support Center. The Purpose of the workshop is to strengthen each of the concepts of self-esteem through games and dynamics, – I recognize myself, I accept myself and I respect myself -. They also learn and practice coexistence and human values basic rules to be able to relate with others. Fifty students out of the 328 that we have under our wing this year are taking this workshop.
Thank you very much for having joined us for the Day of the Dead event last week. Your support is truly appreciated!
Liga MAC’s beloved volunteer Lynn Lewis won the silent auction that night. Our sincere appreciation goes to Bruce Herman for his generous contribution.
